Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm (Original!)
16-02-2019
Hello Cherries! ^.^
Today's review goes back to vintage. I thought it was time for something new and I also received a few questions about other makeup cleansers. So, I made sure to run out of my Kosé cleansing oils and immediately bought the makeup cleanser that was requested the most. The Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm.
In the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s (the golden and classic time of makeup) cleansing creams and balms were a must have on the shelf! Previously, these types of makeup cleansers did all the work and were known for the very good quality (but also the amount of time you lost)! Cleansing creams and balms do still exist and the cleansing balm from Banila Co has become a very popular product! The product was launched in 2008. It has undergone various changes in both packaging and ingredients.
There are still women who know the old packaging. So I'm going through this review with you to see what the old and new packagings are. I also am going to tell about the different variants of this cleansing balm until I'm at the original balm which I'm going to review today. This is to give you a clear picture from 2008 till present.
2008
Here you see the 4 different variants of the Banila Co Clean It Zero Cleansing Balm. The original (pink), resveratrol (green), purity (light blue) and radiance (silver).
Banila Co brought the original cleansing balm first on the market. This was previously only meant for women with combination skin. Not much later, Banila Co brought the other variants onto the market, so women with different skin types could also use the not so familiar balm (back then).
The purity was for women with sensitive skin. The radiance was for women with dry skin and the resveratrol was for women with (older) combination to oily skin. So a balm was available for each skin type!
I have to admit that I could use this product back in the time, but I had never used it in my life. So I do know the old packaging. Personally, I never found this packaging attractive. You only saw Clean it and a color. It never appealed to me to use it at the time and I didn't need it either. I was young and didn't really use makeup.
2010-2018
In 2010 Banila Co brought a small change in both the original balm and the packaging of all 4 variants. The unnecessary text at the bottom of the jar was removed and the word "Zero" became clearly visible on the jar.
In addition, the original balm was formulated so that it was no longer just for combination skin, but for all skin types! Because of these changes, the balm really stood out and grew to the popularity that we know today.
This packaging has lasted for a long time and even lasted until the 10th anniversary of the product!
To be very honest, I think that Banila Co had indeed undergone a complete improvement in terms of packaging. The packaging of 2010 looked much better compared to 2008 where it started. If I didn't like the Kosé cleansing oils then, I think I had reviewed this product much earlier, but I'm glad I was too late. Why? Otherwise I couldn't do these nice comparisons! ^.^
2018 - Present
Now that we have the whole history of this beautiful product behind, I would like to show you which one I use. I have already announced it, but I use the original balm! This balm comes in a bright, beautiful, pink jar with a white lid that's in a shining pink box.
When you open the box, you see a small package on top of the jar. This includes the instructions, closure and spatula. You can fasten the spatula onto the closure.
The manual provides instructions in 4 languages: Korean, Japanese, Chinese and English. In addition, we also find explanations and facts about the other variants. Very useful when you think that the original isn't for you and you want to go to a balm that is specifically meant for your skin type!
The description and promise of Banila Co
Clean It Zero Balm Original is a hypoallergenic cleaner that transforms from a sorbet-like texture into flowing oil when in contact with the skin. It is formulated to remove waterproof makeup and even excess oil and dirt in one easy step. Banila Co Zero Balance Technology deep cleanses and exfoliates mildly without stripping the skin and keeping the skin hydrated and fresh. In addition, double cleansing should be unnecessary.
Main Ingredients + Advice from Banila Co!
Original (my choice, all skin types) -> Papaya extract, Acerola extract, Bamboo, Rooibos, Angelica and Spring water. The original balm is recommended when you can't make a choice and would like to try something that works for all skin types. In addition, the original balm is the best to start with, because it has a bit of everything.
Revitalizing (combination to oily skin) -> All ingredients of the original balm + Resveratrol, Grapeseed and Olive oil. This balm is one of the 3 other variants when you think that the original balm should do something more for your combined (to) oily skin. The ingredients in this balm provide a better elasticity of the skin and make the skin look much more vivid. It's the right boost for women who are struggling with these skin types!
Nourishing (dry skin) -> All ingredients of the original balm + Royal Jelly (honey) and Ginseng berry. This balm is one of the 3 other variants when you think that the original balm should do something more for your dry skin. Ginseng berry is rich in saponin to replenish and nourish the skin for a radiant glow! Exactly what women with this skin type need!
Purifying (sensitive skin) -> All ingredients of the original balm + 7 different herbs that are known for soothing the skin. This balm actually speaks for itself. Banila Co has specially designed this balm for women who have to be very careful when choosing their skin products. This balm is completely safe and contains only the ingredients what it needs to give no reaction! This balm is generally also highly recommended by Banila Co itself!
Texture
The texture is exactly how Banila Co describes it. A sorbet-like texture that turns into oil when it comes into contact with the skin. It's recommended to first heat the balm between the fingers and than apply it to the face.
Dosage (Very important!)
Banila Co indicates that the dosage differs depending on how much makeup you use.
1 full spatula is needed for daily make-up.
For intense makeup a little more than 1 spatula is needed.
Do you prefer to use this product as an eye and/or lip make-up cleaner? Then you only have to use half a spatula.
In the third photo I took 1 full spatula. Normally I need something more, because my mascara is difficult to remove. Usually you have more than enough with 1 spatula, but if you do a lot of waterproof makeup or the American makeup look, this will not be enough!
(You can also use the fingers to get some out of the jar, but I recommend the spatula so you can measure the correct dosage!)
This is a bit of balm on my hand as an example. Here you see that it tends to change a bit.
In contact with the skin, the balm changes into oil. This becomes more visible when you apply it.
In contact with water, the oil changes into a texture of cleansing milk. So this product is actually a balm, oil and milk in 1.

Makeup and products that I had on my face that day:
- Innisfree Green Tea Balancing Cream
- It's Skin Collagen Nutrition Eye Cream
- Catrice Cosmetics HD Liquid Coverage Foundation in no. 020 "Rose Beige"
- Essence Sun Matt Bronzing Powder in no. 2 "Sunny"
- Etude House Play Color Eyes Wine Party Palette - The Last Leaf (Always use it for my eyebrows, because I personally think it looks more natural and lasts longer than normal eyebrow powders.)
- Catrice Cosmetics Eyebrow Filler Perfecting & Shaping Gel
- Etude House Play Color Eyes Wine Party Palette - Cork Stopper
- Etude House Play Color Eyes Wine Party Palette - Rose Sparkling Holic
- L'Oreal Paris Mega Volume Miss Baby Roll Mascara
- Etude House Dear Darling Water Tint in "Cherryade"
The result of this cleansing balm is good enough in my opinion. It easily removes the eye and lip makeup which I really appreciate, because this is often the hardest to remove. Especially due to the fact that I use eye and lip products with a lot of pigment. As for the edges of the face .... The balm can hardly compete with that. So more balm or a double cleansing is necessary in that area (see cotton pad after using my toner to remove the last residue).
Furthermore, I also notice that you have to use some power with this product and especially with the eyes, so that you can take a lot with you. It's not a product that you massage fast and then rinse. It does take some time, but it's worth it!
Personal opinion and score
In terms of removing eye and lip makeup (also called point makeup) this product is really great! It goes easy and it cleans super good, but in general this product has a bit of trouble with regard to good foundations, bronzers and contour. So the promise of a double cleansing is unfortunately not to be fulfilled. This product is effective and also removes enough dead skin cells in addition to makeup. I was startled when I saw how many dead skin cells I had.
Now I have used this product from the beginning of February and I must say that the vitamin C in this product has really done wonders in reducing my redness. I also notice that my face looks much livelier after using this product and that in a short time. I never had this with my previous makeup cleansers. So I was really surprised! In addition, you also notice what the ingredients do with the skin. So it's not just a makeup cleanser, but it really does a lot for the skin! I can understand why this product has been very popular in South Korea for 10 years!
This product deserves an 8.5/10 in my opinion!
